1. Finish the payment review first

A filing portal needs a reliable set of payer details, recipient details and reportable amounts. It does not remove the need to identify the contractor, reconcile the payment year or decide which transactions belong in the total.

Use a contractor preparation checklist before beginning data entry. Resolve open identity, classification, payment-method and withholding questions with the person responsible for filing.

2. Arrange the correct IRIS access

The IRS says you need an IRIS Transmitter Control Code, or TCC, to use the Taxpayer Portal. The portal code identifies the business for IRIS filing; it is not a contractor’s taxpayer identification number.

Begin from the official IRS IRIS page and follow its current application and sign-in instructions. Start before the deadline so access setup does not become the last unresolved step.

3. Choose manual entry or a supported CSV

The Taxpayer Portal supports entering returns manually or uploading a CSV. The IRS describes a limit of up to 100 returns at a time through this portal. Larger software-based filing uses a different IRIS channel.

For an upload, use the IRS format for the particular form and tax year. A CSV extension is not evidence of compatibility: the required columns, values and formatting must match. Keep a copy of the original data and resolve validation errors before submission.

4. Review, submit and check the result

Check the payer and recipient identities, tax year, amounts and withholding fields against the preparation. Saving or uploading an unsubmitted return is not the same as successfully filing it.

After submission, check the portal status and retain the resulting records. If a return is rejected, follow the IRS instructions for resolving the error. If an accepted return needs a correction, use the applicable correction process rather than creating an unexplained duplicate.

5. Handle recipient statements and state requirements

The portal can provide recipient copies for distribution. Decide who is responsible for furnishing them, use an appropriate delivery method, and retain the relevant records. Federal submission and recipient delivery are separate obligations.

Check state filing and withholding requirements for the business and recipient circumstances. Do not assume that a federal submission or a downloaded copy completes every state obligation.

Where Beside fits

Beside organizes contractor documents, reviews payments and generates a completed 1099-NEC recipient Copy B. The PDF is not an IRIS upload file, and the tool does not transmit forms to the IRS.

You can have a qualified person check the completed form, then use the reviewed details in your filing workflow. Keep responsibility for the final reporting decisions, submission and recipient delivery explicit.

Common questions

Is IRS IRIS free?

The IRS describes its Taxpayer Portal as a free web-based filing system. Separate accountant or commercial-provider services may charge their own fees.

Can I upload the downloaded 1099-NEC PDF to IRIS?

No. The PDF is recipient Copy B. Enter the reviewed details in IRIS or use a supported IRS-format CSV for the relevant form and tax year.

Does downloading a 1099-NEC mean it was filed?

No. Generating a form, submitting a return and receiving an accepted filing result are different steps. Verify the actual filing result and arrange recipient delivery.

Written by Beside for U.S. businesses preparing contractor records. IRS sources were checked on September 11, 2026. This is general guidance, not a determination of your tax obligations. Check the instructions for the relevant year and ask your preparer about exceptions.

Examples are fictional. Beside generates recipient Copy B for supported ordinary contractor service payments. It does not file returns, provide paper-filing Copy A, or handle withholding and special reporting.
